As lead voice for the Temptations, David Ruffin was one of the figureheads on Motown's own Mount Rushmore, but at the tail end of the '70s he ventured out from under the Motown umbrella for the first time with SO SOON WE CHANGE. He'd already been a solo artist for some time, but here Ruffin's sound received a bit of an update. While there are plenty of pop-soul moments to satisfy even the most exacting Temptations fan, there's a disco undercurrent to some of the tracks here, with slap-bass, four-on-the-floor kick drum, and chattering synthesizers making occasional appearances. Nevertheless, the production (and performances) are classy enough throughout, so it never sounds like Ruffin's engaged in any bandwagon-jumping, just moving in tune with the times.
